REVIEW BY KELLY J. GOSHORN
As a lover of historical fiction and romance, I’m almost ashamed to say that I’ve FINALLY had the opportunity to read a novel by Roseanna M. White. And, let me tell you, I’ve been missing out. With a blend of history, suspense, romance, and faith, The Spy Keeper of Marseille was an excellent starting point into the volume of her works which total more than 40.
The novel offers a gripping glimpse into World War II occupied France. The story follows Zelie Bellerose, a widowed mother who becomes deeply involved with the French Resistance and eventually assumes leadership within a dangerous network of spies. When renowned pianist Marcel Laurent is freed from a POW camp, he joins the Resistance and uses his weekly youth orchesta broadcasts to send coded messages via the airwaves.
Zelie is a particularly engaging heroine because she combines courage with vulnerability. Although circumstances force her into extraordinary responsibility, she remains deeply aware of the personal cost of her choices—especially the separation from her children. Her journey is not simply one of becoming a capable Resistance leader but also of rediscovering her faith and learning to trust God when she cannot control the outcome.
“Freedom is always worth sacrificing for.”
Roseanna M. White, The Spy Keeper of Marseilles
Marcel provides a wonderful contrast to Zelie. Gentle, talented, and deeply compassionate, he possesses a strong faith while also wrestling with his own understanding of God’s presence and purpose. Their shared love of music adds emotional depth to their relationship.
The setting of Marseille and wartime France is richly drawn, balancing the beauty of French culture and music against the fear and brutality of Nazi occupation. White does an excellent job of capturing the constant tension of espionage, where ordinary conversations, performances, and friendships can conceal deadly secrets. The historical foundation is especially fascinating, with the novel drawing inspiration from the real-life French Resistance network led by Marie-Madeleine Fourcade.
I only found one weakness with this story and that is the beginning of the book moved a bit too slow for my taste. However, after the first quarter, the pacing improved and I was hooked. I found myself listening at every opportunity. The story grew more intense the deeper I got into the novel, which I loved. One word of caution, while not overly graphic, sensitive readers may find the description of wartime scenes, including violence and torture, uncomfortable.
Readers who enjoy well-researched historical novels, clean romance with emotionally gripping characters laced with messages of faith and hope will want to read The Spy Keeper of Marseille. I’m pleased to give The Spy Keeper of Marseille five well-deserved fish.

I listened to The Spy Keeper of Marseilles via Audible. The narrator, Megan Tusing, did a remarkable job. If you’re a fan of listening to your fiction, I highly recommend this audiobook.
Great review, Kelly! I’ve heard of The Spy Keeper of Marseille, but I had no idea what it was about. I didn’t know who the real-life Fourcade was either. (I just read up on her, and it brought tears to my eyes. What a brave woman … with brave kids, too!) I also think it’s clever for Laurent to use the youth orchestra broadcast for secret messages; I mean wow. Oh, I love the sound of this book!

War stories break my heart. (Even in the background.) Sounds like powerful writing, even if it’s not for me. Thanks for sharing, Kelly. And I love the quote you chose.

I’m not quite the reader for this book but I can see how those who love historical faith-based suspense would gobble it up in a heartbeat. It’s also commendable the author based it on the true French Resistance network. It sounds like she does impeccable research!
