Michelle Griep’s Of Gold and Shadows is an engaging blend of Victorian mystery, historical romance, and adventure that transports readers to 1888 and the gaslit streets of Oxford, England. Rich in suspense, the novel explores themes of courage, identity, faith, and the pursuit of truth while weaving an intriguing tale around Egyptian antiquities and hidden dangers.

The story centers around Ami Dalton, a determined young Egyptologist who struggles to gain respect in a male-dominated academic world. Unknown to most, Ami also operates as the mysterious “Shadow Broker,” rescuing stolen artifacts from the black market. When Edmund Price returns to England after years in India and seeks an expert to evaluate a collection of Egyptian treasures, his path unexpectedly crosses with Ami’s. Their growing relationship develops amid rumors of an ancient curse connected to a golden griffin and a series of increasingly dangerous events.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its setting. Griep vividly captures Victorian England, complete with its fascination for Egyptology, social expectations, and dark, shadowy alleyways. The historical details feel well researched without overwhelming the story. Readers who enjoy Gothic elements will appreciate the sense of mystery and foreboding that lingers throughout the novel.

The chemistry between Ami and Edmund is enjoyable, particularly because both characters possess intelligence, determination, and vulnerabilities that make them relatable. Ami’s passion for archaeology and refusal to accept societal limitations make her a compelling heroine, while Edmund’s integrity and growing admiration for her provide a solid foundation for the romance.

The novel is not without a few minor flaws. At times, the plot includes several twists and coincidences that can feel somewhat convenient, and some readers may find the pacing uneven in the middle chapters. However, neither of these will prevent me from reading book two in the series, Of Silver and Secrets.

Of Gold and Shadows is a satisfying historical romance with strong characters, a fascinating setting, and plenty of intrigue. Fans of Christian historical fiction, Victorian mysteries, and adventurous heroines will find much to enjoy in this delightful first installment of the Time’s Lost Treasures series.

I listened to Of Gold and Shadows on audiobook. I found the characterization wonderful. I would recommend this story for those who enjoy audiobooks.
