Review by Mae Clair

I love Biblical fiction, especially when it is well-researched and presented. Lana Christian promises an “immersive experience” for readers and more than delivers with this sprawling tale set shortly after the birth of Christ.

Although this is book two of The Magi Encounters, I had no problem picking up the plot (I hadn’t read book one). It took only a short while to settle in and become familiar with the characters and their relations to one another. The author does an excellent job of establishing what came before. In no time at all I was engrossed, swept away to a distant time amid the dusty towns, wilderness, and roads of the Parthian Empire.

Akilah, Rashidi, and Tallis, the three wisemen who followed THE STAR in the first novel, now attempt to return to Egypt while steering clear of Herod Antipas, Roman soldiers, and territorial disputes. The journey takes their caravan into the Wilderness of Paran on a trek fraught with danger and increasing hardships. (The scenes involving an aged camel and a dust storm had me on the edge of my seat!).

Political intrigue against a backdrop of unrest plays out like a chess match, but enhances rather than distracts from the spiritual aspects. Most of the characters are discovering and learning about Adonai for the first time, their faltering steps of faith enriching the depth of their decisions. I ached with Akilah as he prayed for God to deliver the caravan to Egypt.

Shortly after the start, the story splits into three distinct sections—Akilah and Rashidi with the caravan; Tallis who is taken prisoner; and Akilah’s cousin, Farzaneh—an astute woman searching for a deeper understanding of the God of the Hebrews. I was particularly smitten with the thread following Tallis, though all three parts held me spellbound. Farzaneh’s arc is rich with backstory but easy to follow, especially as it takes unexpected twists in the present.

Elyakim paused, gauging Farzaneh’s confusion. “When Messiah comes, the world will never be the same again. He will reveal what’s in people’s hearts, and many hearts are dark indeed. Kings who believe they alone deserve their throne… Jews with their own ideas of what the Messiah should be instead of what the holy writings say He is. All those people have much to lose from Messiah’s coming. Religions—even empires—will shake or crumble.”

Survival Secrets, Lana Christian

Attention to detail is surpassed only by attention to the characters and their motivations. If I had any quibble at all, I would have liked better visuals of each. I was a good distance through the book before I grasped several character ages—a few of which surprised me. Perhaps they were better established in book one. Overall, a minor trifle considering the deft layers of story Christian wove together in this mesmerizing tale. Chapters are short which makes reading the next almost mandatory when the writing and storyline are so engaging. Note that while all the major plot threads are resolved by the end, the overall tale continues in a third book yet to be released.

If you are a fan of Biblical fiction, Survival Secrets is not to be missed. I enjoyed it so much, once I finished, I immediately went back and bought the first novel New Star, which I promptly devoured. I can’t wait for book three! I give Survival Secrets five enthusiastic fish!

I received an ARC of Survival Secrets from the author for an honest review.

  1. Enticing review, Mae! What it must have been like to live in those days … the politics, Roman soldiers, camels (oh, how they must have been stinky), and the upheaval caused by THE STAR. I’m glad we can visit that time through reading without having to experience the dangers. Though wouldn’t it have been wonderful to see the Messiah when He was walking the earth?

    1. Priscilla, I often use the practice of imaginative prayer to visualize what it must have been like the night of Jesus’s birth. I especially love to imagine the shepherds and Mary and Joseph in the stable (or cave). What an amazing night that must have been, the same with walking with Jesus and listening to him preach!

Lana Christian brought the ancient world to vivid life in her story. The love for her work truly shines through in every scene. I was enthralled!

  2. I’m curious as to whether the “wrong” names of the three Magi made immersion more difficult, though I am glad to see the author wrote a book two that doesn’t need the history of book one to be enjoyable. Then again, I wonder how much your personal knowledge of the biblical events played a part in bridging that gap. So many questions!

This is a fascinating time in our history, and it sounds like a great read. Thanks for sharing, Mae.

    1. Hmm… I hadn’t considered the names of the Magi. I’d honestly forgotten there are traditional names for them. From the moment I started reading, I was engrossed in the story as told by the author. The tale she relayed wasn’t Biblical but set during Biblical times and rich with characters of faith. She definitely did a ton of historical research and it really showed.

It was most certainly an exceptional read!

    1. The author definitely brought the time period to life for me, Gwen. She also did an amazing job of showing the growing faith (along with questions and moments of doubt) of the various characters. I enjoyed an amazing journey within the pages of this book!

  3. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have lived in the days of Jesus’s birth and earthly ministry? This sounds like a wonderful read, Mae. Like most Christians, I grew up believing there were three wise men, but of course the Bible doesn’t say there were only three. However, I can see why an author would continue that idea even in fiction.

    Thanks for your insightful review.

    1. Joan, I grew up with the same idea—that here were only three wise men, but you’re absolutely right. We really don’t know how many there were. In my mind, I always see the picture of them on camels, or gathered at the manager (even though they didn’t actually see Jesus until he was about two years old).

And although I’ll never know what it was like to live them, Lana Christian did an amazing job of transporting me to that time!

    1. Thank you, Kelly. I never thought I’d enjoy Biblical fiction then I took a chance on the book Pearl in the Sand and I was hooked. It was the novel that helped pave the way to lead me back to the Lord. Ever since then I’ve been enamored of Biblical fiction, and can’t seem to get enough.
