REVIEW BY GWEN M. PLANO
In this Christian romance story, Rose’s husband leaves her for another woman. She is devastated and questions herself, life, and even God. Soon thereafter, she meets Derek, who has just emerged from a traumatic divorce and now helps his aging grandparents on their farm. The two establish a working relationship, and through the day-to-day encounters, they begin to trust each other and God. Eventually, they fall in love, and when they look back at their lives, they see the once hidden blessings.
“Sometimes we can’t see the reason until we look back. That’s where faith comes in, to enable us to look ahead and know that God’s reasons are right, and good, and just, and the very best for us, even if we can’t see it.”
Jessie Gussman, Cowboy Walking Away
This is a heartwarming story of second chances. The setting and characters resonated and kept me focused throughout. When the two principal characters faced the darkness of doubt and confusion, I related to their struggle even though their circumstances were different from mine. Don’t we all look back and question our decisions or actions? I credit Gussman for effectively revealing this universal experience.
Cowboy Walking Away had a predictable outcome, but this was a romance and not a mystery or a thriller. There was no trauma or discord. The story simply unfolded slowly, easily, and with care, as Gussman highlighted God’s sometimes unrecognized love.
This was a lovely four fish read with a memorable ending.

I read Cowboy Walking Away on Kindle.
I think this book would resonate with me. I went through something recently and could not see God’s timing until afterwards. Kudos to Gussman for putting this lesson into a fiction story. Thanks, Gwen, for sharing your thoughts on Cowboy Walking Away!

Gussman has a wonderful way of using the ordinary and to help us see the extraordinary in our daily lives. That’s an amazing skill. Thanks, Priscilla.

Great reminder, Gwen, that our spiritual rearview mirror has a label across the bottom. “God in mirror is closer than He appears.” Thanks!

I’m the poster child for second-guessing past decisions. Nice to see an author handle that concept with grace. Thanks for sharing, Gwen.

You brought a smile, Staci. I suspect we can all claim to be the poster child at times. And you are right about Gussman, she handled it with grace.

This sounds like a gentle and heartwarming book. The Lord is constantly giving us second chances.
So many times something will occur in life that I don’t understand, only to have the revelation come much later when I look back on the event.
Kudos to the author for weaving such an inspirational thread into her story.
Lovely review, Gwen.

I absolutely love the quote you pulled, Gwen. I’ve been in situations where I questioned God’s purpose (or His timing). Later, I can look back and see that He always has a purpose for things and His timing is perfect.
Thanks for sharing this review. Sometimes we need to read books that aren’t tension filled.

I read a lot of fantasy, horror, and sci-fi, but sometimes you just need a book like this to leave you with a smile on your face. Great review, Gwen! With twelve in the series, you’ve got some reading ahead of you.
