Miracle at Angels Bend by R. Christian Bohlen
Stand-alone Novel

REVIEW BY JOAN HALL
Miracle at Angels Bend is a novel in that it tells the story of four people who share a profound encounter with the life of wisdom of Jesus Christ. Yet it’s different than any other novel I’ve read.
Josh is a budding musician living life in the fast lane. Hannah is an aspiring missionary using opioids to cope with family loss. Dave is grappling with his mentally ill wife. Lorina is an outspoken journalist who is in love with a married man. The four of them reluctantly come together to read and give feedback on a manuscript written by a mysterious unknown author. Along the way, they stumble, doubt, hold hidden secrets, and discover things about themselves.
“We always need God. Sometimes, when we think we can do life on our own, He allows us to drive into a wall so we look for Him.

What is uniquely different about this novel is interspersed within the pages is the story of Christ. We learn about His birth, ministry, and death as each character reads the pages of the book. These parts read like Christian nonfiction similar to what someone like Max Lucado or John MacArthur might write. Non-believers, new believers, and even seasoned Christians can learn from the pages of this book. There are also discussion questions at the end for those who want to do a group book study.
“What does the birth story teach us about God the Son, the Creator of all things? He didn’t make a grand entrance to prove by His power and magnificence that He was God. He sacrificed the glory of His heavenly home so He could teach us in person despite the pains He knew He would face. His very first act on earth—His birth—was the embodiment of humility.”

One thing I enjoyed is that the book is realistic. In fact, the author drew inspiration from real people and events. Does everything end up happily ever after? Not really. While some of the characters do convert to Christianity, others are still struggling at the end of the book. Readers who like everything to be wrapped up nicely might not like this part, but for those characters, the author gives us glimmers of hope.
Once I got into the pages and discovered the author’s style, I found the book hard to put down. I happily give it four and a half fish.

I purchased a copy of Miracle at Angels Bend through Amazon.
I enjoyed your review, Joan, got a copy, and I’m eager to dive into this story. Thank you!

Josh, Hannah, Dave, and Lorina all sound like fascinating characters. I’m especially curious about Hannah. Will she be able to kick her opioid addiction? I guess I’ll have to read the book to find out! It sounds like a uniquely written book with the nonfiction bits interspersed. Interesting review, Joan!

It is a unique book, Priscilla. I can’t recall where I learned of this book, but I’m glad I did. (And I won’t give anything away about Hannah, LOL.)

This sounds intriguing. A great diversity in characters, exactly who could benefit from an awakening.

Your comment nailed it, Jacqui. They needed an awakening (as we all do from time to time).

Wow, that cover grabbed me the moment I saw it, Joan. It’s gorgeous!
The book sounds unique, especially the way the story of the four characters are interspersed with the tale of Jesus’s life.
I absolutely loved the first pull-quote. I think we’ve all driven into that wall a time or two.
An insightful review!

It was a different kind of Christian Fiction, Mae. I also like the cover. And yes, I’ve driven into that wall more times than I care to admit.
