Finding Riley by Dan Walsh
Series: The Forever Home Series Book Two
Publisher: Bainbridge Press, October 1, 2016
REVIEW BY JOAN HALL
I’ve enjoyed several of Dan Walsh’s suspense stories, and being an animal lover, I was eager to try his Forever Home series.
Riley is a high-spirited canine who travels with his family for a December vacation in Florida. When they stop in a remote area, Riley breaks free of his leash and escapes into the woods. As it turned out his young owner, Jeffery, didn’t fasten the leash correctly.
John is a homeless person who has come to live in a camp with his friend Alfred. A few days later, Riley wanders into the area where John lives, and they become fast friends.
But as you can imagine, young Jeffrey is heartbroken over losing his beloved Riley.
“We can’t see Riley, and we don’t know where he is. But God sees everything. He knows right where Riley is at this very moment. Maybe we should hold hands and pray for God to protect him, and somehow bring him back to us safe and sound.”
Dan Walsh, Finding Riley
John begins to call the dog Smiley and his entire demeanor changes. On the advice of Jenny, another homeless person who has worked in animal shelters, John takes “Smiley” to a local shelter to be scanned for a microchip to see if his family can be located.
I had mixed emotions. While I was saddened for Jeffrey, I also recognized the bond John had formed with Riley and my heart went out to him. Part of the story is told from Riley’s perspective, and I think the author did a great job of imagining how our pets react to certain things.
I won’t provide any spoilers, but I’ll say I teared up at the end. The story takes place around Christmas, but it is suitable for reading any time of the year.
Four and a half fish for this one.
I purchased the Kindle version of Finding Riley through Amazon.
It sounds like a beautiful but very emotional story. I think it sounds like a wonderful book. Thank you for a great review.

Yes I believe you are right. They are like little people or kids.

I can imagine tearing up at John becoming attached and then giving up Riley, Jeffery losing his furry friend, or Riley losing his human friend. Great review, Joan. I think I would love this book!

I hope you enjoy it, Grant. I like Dan’s books. One of my favorites is a Christmas Story set during World War II.

Before you mentioned you’d teared up, I was thinking I’d probably do the same, lol. I love when pets get a POV in books. Sometimes they’re pretty humorous. Nice review, Joan!

Riley was certainly a live wire. I loved the parts from his POV. I often tear up with animal stories. I recall reading Where the Red Fern Grows for the first time, and I cried so hard I could barely see to read the ending.

It sounds like a good story, but I know it’s not for me. Sometimes I have more trouble with animal stories than people stories. Thanks for the review, Joan.

I’m the same way with animal stories. (Why doesn’t this come as a surprise?) However, this one did have a satisfactory ending.

The power of dog–unmeasurable. Riley might have known John needed him. Clicking through…

I suspect my tears would flow as well. It took me years to get over my beloved dog’s passing, and thinking about her still brings tears. Wonderful review, Joan. I’ve added it to my list.

I’ve read a few of the books in Dan Walsh’s Forever Home Series and enjoyed them all. This is one I have yet to get to (yes, I read them out of order, LOL), but I know I’ll enjoy it. And I love the way he gives POV to the animal characters in his books. Great review, Joan, and definitely one for my TBR.

Ooh, this sounds like an emotional read. I know the couple of times my cat escaped I was in a panic until we found her.
Wonderful review, Joan.

I’ve had that experience as well, Jacquie. I call my little Manx an “escape artist.” We have to be careful or he’ll try to dart out the door.

Walsh’s book is my next TBR. Thanks for the reminder, Joan! I’m looking forward to the read. I’m deep into several books, and the top of the list is finishing Candle Sutton’s earlier series while waiting for her next novel coming out later this May.
