REVIEW BY JOAN HALL
Chef Addie Nichols is living her dream—owning a fledgling upscale restaurant in Greenwich Village. But the dream doesn’t come without challenges—six months into opening the restaurant, her finances are dwindling.
When a woman named Monica Farrell shows up after closing time, insisting on seeing Addie, she agrees. Monica offers Addie $10,000 to be a private chef for her husband’s fiftieth birthday celebration at a remote location called Spirit’s Island. The original chef canceled at the last minute. Monica’s husband had dined many times at Addie’s restaurant and said it was a favorite place for him.
When Addie thinks about how far the 10K will go toward alleviating her debt, she agrees. But upon arriving, she immediately begins to have doubts. It turns out Richard Farrell is someone she knew by the name of Rob and had once dated.
Soon, it becomes apparent that someone doesn’t want Addie on Spirit’s Island. Is it Richard? Or someone else? Will Addie make it off the island alive?
Calm down. You have to calm down.
She had to control her runaway panic. She needed to be ready. Because she was alone. Alone with a killer.
D L Wood, The Offer
The chapters are short, but well-written, which adds to the suspense. The characters are well-developed. There is a hint of romance between Addie and a local resident named Sam. The story has a lot of twists and turns, and the author keeps the reader guessing until the end.
I thought the ending was a bit over the top, and the climactic scene was a bit too drawn out. For those reasons, I’m giving The Offer a rating of four fish, but I would definitely read more of this author’s works.

I purchased the Kindle version of The Offer through Amazon.
Thanks for the review, Joan. Your closing note made me curious about the ending, so I grabbed a copy and looking forward to the read.

Oh, this sounds suspenseful! The isolated setting would make it even more so. Great review, Joan! I like the eerie atmosphere of the cover, too.

Gwen, I read the first of this series last winter as part of a boxed set. I was intrigued enough to read this one.

This sounds clever and fresh. It’s hard to imagine $10,000 would make that much of a difference to Greenwich Village restaurant, but I’ll go along with it!

I love that cover, and the sound of all the twists and turns. I just finished a book that was definitely “over the top” but that’s often sheer escapist fun. This sounds like a story I’d enjoy!

Sometimes, it’s fun to read those types of books. We often need to escape, especially in this day and age. I’m thankful to have books that enable us to do just that.
