Break of Day by Colleen Coble
Series: Annie Pederson Book Three
Publisher: Thomas Nelson; July 4, 2023
REVIEW BY JOAN HALL
Break of Day is the third and final book in Colleen Coble’s Annie Pedersen series and is my favorite of the three. I’ll try to be careful with this review because I don’t want to give away spoilers for those who haven’t read the first two books.
Annie Pedersen is finally getting her relationship with Jon Dunstan on track, but they still have obstacles to face. Secrets are hard to keep, especially when children know them. Annie’s in-laws show up to visit their granddaughter Kylie and receive a surprise revelation. Angry and bitter, they leave town. It’s not long afterward, that Annie is served with a custody suit from the Pedersons.
Jon is torn between the possibility of going into practice with another orthopedic surgeon in a nearby town or opening his own in Rock Harbor.
In the meantime, a vicious and cruel killer is on the loose. A series of deaths in the national forest—at least one going back fifteen years—are still unsolved. Annie is tenacious in her investigation, and someone doesn’t want her to learn the truth.
When two other women are kidnapped and held in a bunker deep within the forest, Annie sets out to rescue them, but she’s soon kidnapped as well. Jon attempts to find and bring them to safety before they become the next murder victims.
She found it hard to believe anyone could be so twisted and cruel. Evil was the real word. There was evil in the world, and the three of them faced it right now.
Colleen Coble, Break of Day
This is my favorite of the series. Annie shows more strength than in the previous books. Colleen did a fantastic job with the development of another character who was initially known as Taylor. (Again, I hesitate to say much because of spoilers).
Like the quote above, there is plenty of evil in this world and the book. Coble did a good job of keeping me guessing the identity of the killer and mastermind behind the kidnappings. I did have my suspicions and was proved right, but that didn’t spoil the story.
Despite the evil, the underlying theme in Break of Day is forgiveness. While this series has wrapped up, I wouldn’t mind seeing a new series with Taylor as the lead.
Happy to give this one four and a half fish!

I purchased the Kindle version of Break of Day through Amazon.
It sounds like a tense family-drama suspense story. Great review, Joan! I’m already wondering if Annie and the other two kidnap victims will survive.

It’s always a bonus when a series ends on a strong note – and it must have been a relief to discover this was your favourite book. Lovely to note that despite the evil and violence, one of the main themes is forgiveness – thank you for sharing!

She did, Mae. Honestly, I didn’t care for her too much at first, but she grew on me.

I’m guessing by your review it would be best to read these in order?

Yes, Jacquie. I don’t usually care for series fiction, and each book had its “own” story, but to read out of order would spoil some things.

I get that. The Charley Davidson series was the same way. Thanks, Joan.

Glad the MC improved with the series, Joan. It’s always hard to review books in a series without spoilers, but you did a great job – you hooked me without giving anything away.

It’s really hard to review a third book without giving away details and spoilers. You did well, Joan, and that’s great that the third book finished the story in a highly satisfying way. Thanks for sharing your review. 🙂 Happy Reading.
